Singer John Martyn dies aged 60.

Quote from John: “I’m not a folky, I’m a funky.â€

Musical genius John Martyn, born Ian David McGeachy, has died aged 60 from double pneumonia. John died in hospital in Ireland. The singer and songwriter was awarded an OBE in the New Year honours and he collaborated with artists such as Eric Clapton and Phil Collins, who paid tribute to his "infuriating" friend.

A statement on John's official website said: "With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning."

From a recent interview with Simon Copland (The Sun):
WHEN I interviewed singer-songwriter John Martyn two months ago, he told me he was a tough person to kill. I believed him – after all, this hell-raising musician, who died yesterday aged 60, had survived drug addiction, car crashes, muggings, leg amputation and being shot at by an outraged love rival.

Sadly, he couldn’t beat double pneumonia, the latest health problem brought on by heavy boozing, which killed him in a hospital in Ireland.

Still Seriously Missed

I've been to Hastings today to visit my brother and as we walked in the Old Town my brother started reminiscing about drinking in The Nelson pub with JM back in the 1980s. This reminded me how much I miss the man and his music. I first saw him in 1967 at The Hanging Lamp folk club in Richmond, and lastly at The Fairfield Halls in Croydon (c.2007?). Plus dozens of times in between. As I wrote on the JM official website, when his death was announced, he has been the soundtrack to my life. RIP John. Patrick Russell

Legend Doesn't Even Come Close

There's not a day that goes by that I don't listen to a John Martyn record.
Words cannot express his talents. His music can help you through all emotions and its a great honour to be able to listen to him everyday.

Couldn't Love You More is the song my Fiance & I have picked for our first dance at our wedding as its possibly the most beautiful song ever written.

See you on the other side Mr Martyn

To a true legend x

Why do all the best ones get taken away? You have influenced my life so much over the years with your music. You have made me laugh, cry and both at the same time. Never has a musician had such an impact on me. You really are a legend John and I thank you for touching my life in such a way. May you rest in peace big man and may your music live on. Such sad news. John seems to have been with me all my life, going back to the first album I discovered in 1970 - Bless the Weather – when I was 16. I went on to buy everything new he produced.

I’m very grateful to have had the chance to see him one last time in Brighton on the Grace and Danger tour last November. Even though he had to be helped onto the stage in his wheelchair, he still brought the same energy to that gig as he did to the first one I saw 35 years ago.

Thanks for all the music John - I'm glad you had a life well lived.

Vale

I've been a John Martyn fan since the early 1970s. One of the best concerts I've ever, ever seen was when he played at the student bar at Latrobe University in Melbourne, Australia in the late 70s. I can't believe I was so lucky — to hear him play, and watch from so close in a tiny, tiny venue full of transfixed fans. Vale a very clever, beautiful musician who has brought so much joy to my life and the lives of so many others. John, (Ian) you will be deeply missed, and always loved and appreciated. I'm sorry you had such a hard road to hoe, but selfishly thankful that that road gave the world such precious music. We are listening to you tonight — over and over.
Always, with love, Donna
